Seth Owen

Chair of the Board of Directors

Pronouns: he/him/his

Seth Owen serves as President of Unbroken Horizons Scholarship Foundation and as Chair of the Board of Directors. Additionally, Seth serves as a Youth Ambassador for the Human Rights Campaign and as an Intern in Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy’s Washington, D.C. Office. Seth is currently an Undergraduate Student at Georgetown University where he plans to double-major in Government and African American Studies. Seth is proud to have brought awareness to the issue of LGBTQ+ homelessness when his story was shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and in former Vice President Joe Biden’s speech at the 2018 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner. Seth is honored to be given the opportunity – because of the generous donations of people around the globe and because of the Ellen DeGeneres Show, partnered with Cheerios – to be able to start this scholarship foundation to give students in marginalized communities a chance to further their education and effect change around the world. 


Zenja Key Stallworth

Vice Chair of the Board of Directors

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Zenja Key Stallworth serves as Vice President of Unbroken Horizons Scholarship Foundation and as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Additionally, she is an Educator at the secondary school level and is Founder and Director of Ladies of First Coast and Women of First Coast, two nonprofits that mentor young women. For the past ten years, Zenja has taught and mentored countless youth in an urban school district. Her passion for positively affecting youth’s lives has brought her to Unbroken Horizons. She shares Seth’s passion in helping marginalized youth access post-secondary education. Zenja believes that the funds received from the scholarship may serve as a powerful catalyst to keep students to stay in school. 


Emma Chuck

Secretary of the Board of Directors

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Emma Chuck serves as the Secretary of the Board of Directors. She is an Undergraduate Student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. which is far from her home in Hawaii, but she enjoys the opportunity to branch out, meet new people, learn new things, and grow. Emma was a longtime member of a community service club, helping to reduce the stigma and lack of knowledge about mental health by participating in suicide awareness events. Emma is excited to be a part of the team at Unbroken Horizons as she endeavors to make education more accessible and inclusive, all while supporting other students who have the drive and perseverance to be successful in education.


Jaye Thomas

Director

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Jaye Thomas serves as a Member of the Board of Directors. She is an Undergraduate Student at Georgetown University with plans to major in history. Jaye is a tutor with Georgetown Prison Outreach – a program that helps inmates receive their GED. Additionally, she volunteers Charitabulls Foundation in Chicago, Illinois – there she helps provide resources to under-serviced people and communities.  Jaye is a huge advocate for making education accessible. She is a part of Unbroken Horizons because she is a firm believer that everyone, regardless of their identities, deserves a right to education.


Dr. Kathy Maguire-Zeiss

Director

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Dr. Kathy Maguire-Zeiss serves as a Member of the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Scholar Selection Committee. Additionally, she is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Georgetown University Medical Center.  Her laboratory’s research is focused on the brain’s immune response in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder. Dr. Kathy has worked with students that are first-generation college students and/or economically disadvantaged as a mentor.  She also serves as a Residential Minister in the Roman Catholic tradition at Georgetown University. Dr. Kathy was drawn to Unbroken Horizons after meeting Seth and listening to his story and that of other students that have had to overcome significant challenges to pursue their education.  She believes that education is one of the keys to a fulfilling life and there are so many deserving students that don’t have the support of their family or community that she was blessed to have – she believes that any opportunity to make a difference in our community is worthy of our time. 



Kaylee Petik

Director

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Kaylee Petik serves as a Member of the Board of Directors and as the Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing. Additionally, Kaylee is a Pre-Calculus Honors and AP Calculus AB teacher at First Coast High School. She prides herself on her ability to provide students of all backgrounds and experiences with a safe space on campus to be themselves, by cultivating a loving and supportive classroom environment on campus. Kaylee is elated to be a part of Unbroken Horizons so she can promote and support students in their academic endeavors. She believes that education gives kids the power of choice, and having the ability to make a choices is the most important gift she could ever give a child.


Kyle Fortenberry

Director

Kyle Fortenberry serves as a Member of the Board of Directors and as Senior Vice President of Development and Planning. He is a Concurrent Enrollment Instructor for Andrew Jackson High School and First Coast High School. Kyle is proud to work with a program that provides access to college courses to high school students that may otherwise not have access to education. Throughout his teaching career, Kyle has had the opportunity to work with high poverty students, LGBTQ+ students, and refugee students. Kyle is excited to be part of Unbroken Horizons because he wants students of all backgrounds to have access to higher education. He believes, no student, given the ability, should be denied access to the opportunities afforded by a college education. What’s more, he wants to empower these students to take the knowledge gained through their own experiences and struggles and use that as a tool to make lasting change in the world.
